We don’t want to throw out any option. Even opportunities in the shark area maybe are Golden fishes in the future. So we will use the following circles to focus on one option meanwhile keeping others open.
From this figure, it could be examined that there are three circles in this system. The Start Circle is your first best option and opportunity. Put your opportunities from Golden fish in this area. If you don’t have any option from golden fish, you could also insert other options from small fish or big fish. Anyhow, it is important to have just one opportunity in this area. It calls the “power of one” when you focus on just one subject, it works better and you will have maximum effort to perform it.
Nonetheless, you should also keep your other options open as well. In the business world with the best situation, you may also face unpredictable obstacles. Or else, the market may not like your service or idea at all. Therefore, the Back-Up area is kept for other options in order to keep them open and updated. Your second and third option could be in this area. Actually back up area is for plan B in case that your opportunity in the Start area does not work. Usually, it takes up to 6 months till you understand if your plan A is working or not. Of course, it really depends on the type of business you are in however, you should not go to opportunities in the Backup area before you are done with plan A. Therefore, you should assess again the opportunities in the backup area every 3 months. Despite the fact if your plan A is working, you should keep the opportunities in the backup area updated. By updating we mean you go again and ask a question in opportunity sets and gather new information. They may come to the golden fish area or shark. So, it is crucial to be aware of updating any plan before performing.
Not Now Area is for opportunities you decided not to perform now. Usually, opportunities in the shark area belong to this circle. It is imperative for you to remember these options and you should also keep them as well as update them every six months.
Opportunities in both the “Back Up” area and “not now” could be used as the development or growth plan. In addition to that, you should every time optimize plan A at first and then develop unless you invest your time in different options parallel and your efficiency will decrease. A good example is Apple. For many years, Apple produced just computers and there were no smartphones or other gadgets being focused upon by the company. When they optimized the first product, they expanded their activity and introduced their iPhone, iPad, iwatch besides other devices into the market.
So, first, focus on plan A and optimize it, then use back up area options to develop.
